Tatiana Potts
Perceptual Guardians
Three-color lithograph
Paper Size: 18” x 18 1/2”
Paper Type: grey Rives BFK
Edition of 17
Perpetuating Guardians draws inspiration from architectural spaces in New Haven, Connecticut, and Knoxville, Tennessee. Potts combines selected architectural details from each location to construct a newly imagined environment. The pop-up elements and chairs suggest the absence of friends or family while simultaneously functioning as an invitation for others to enter and experience the space.
The text incorporated into the work is written in English and Slovak using the Cyrillic alphabet. This approach allows Potts freedom from strict concerns about spelling while creating a layered, semi-coded language that can be partially read but not easily deciphered. Influenced by the visual richness of illuminated manuscripts, the text functions both as language and ornament, enhancing the visual and conceptual atmosphere of the piece.
